Although paintings are created by an individual artist, they are at the same time the product of an entire society that coagulates in the quill of an artist. The author has subjected this selection process to a single criterion: importance in terms of artistic production, focusing attention, in particular, on painters who are considered pioneers or founders of schools or doctrines in the art of painting.
